Nothing makes you question your life like seeing other students getting married. These people know whom they want to spend the rest of their lives with.
This made me realise how many students have their futures, or some aspect thereof, figured out. I am not one of those students. At 18 I thought that I would have a clear idea of where I wanted to be in life by the time I reached 21.
That landmark is less than a week away, so I think it’s safe to say that that notion did not materialise.
Unlike engineering and BAcc students, I’m not studying for a specific career. I’m in my final year and am still unsure what my majors will be. Seeing people your age making huge decisions like getting married or emigrating can make one feel a little lost.
I think we have to remember that we’ve gotten this far. There’s a difference between being unambitious and confused.
I try to take pride in the small victories. I knew I was not going to meet my “soul mate” at university, and so far that has materialised. I may not know what I will do with my degree, but at this rate I know that I will get it.
Humans are living longer. We have more time to figure out what we want to do with our lives.
To those of you with a five year plan, I commend you. But for those of us who are still finding our feet, be it in first or final year, I feel like we need to breathe. We’ve gotten this far, haven’t we?
